"Get the most out of SIPs"

What are Structural Insulated Panels and why are they fast becoming the building system of choice for low energy buildings? Learn more from our SIPs Guide.

What are SIPs?

Structural Insulated Panels of SIPs for short consist of an insulated core that is bonded on both sides with a skin, typically the skin material is orientated strand board (OSB3).

The blank SIPs are manufactured in 1.2m wide panels with heights up to 6.25m and standard thicknesses from 125mm to 250mm to achieve u-values as low as 0.10 w/m2K.

Benefits of SIPs?

SIPs offer the widely recognised offsite manufactured benefits of speed, limited disruption and waste, but, provide additional benefits:
improved comfort from thermal performance
inherent airtightness limits air leakages
create live-able roof spaces
impressive vaulted ceilings
large open span spaces without columns

Disadvantages of SIPs?

You must not expose SIPs to moisture for prolonged periods of time, therefore, it is not recommended to utilise SIPs below ground.

Solution: A hybrid system with ICF walls below ground (e.g. basement) and SIPs walls above ground or a SIPs roof.

Cost of SIPs?

SIPs is a premium buidling system that will typically cost more than traditional methods and timber frame in isolation.

Looking at the costs holistically has identified areas to save money in the overall build costs when compared with alternative methods and including the whole life costs can provide long term savings.

How is SIPs installed?

The SIPs kit is delivered and will need to be offloaded! A vehicle with hiab lifting capability or a telescopic handler can be used to unload the SIPs kit. Scheduling the deliveries for the days that lifting plant is on site will smooth the unloading and installing of the structure.

What finishes can I use with SIPs?

Lightweight wall finishes like cedar, render, rainscreen and brick slips require no additional support. Traditional finishes like brickwork and stone typically require foundations to carry the increased weights. The full range of roof finishes are available with a ventilated cavity and additional deck required or not subject to your choice of product.

Working with SIPs?

An overview of the process for a SIPs project:
Provide approved architect drawings
Estimate for services required
Detailed set of construction drawings
Manufacture and Fabrication of SIPs
Installation of structure onsite

* The above process with typically take 8-12 weeks subj, size of build *

How to Procure SIPs?

TOP TIP!!! The best results are achieved when you procure SIPs as a complete package including: design, manufacture, fabrication, installation and project management for BBA accredited SIPs.
