"Our guide to getting the most out of SIPs"

What are Structural Insulated Panels and why are they fast becoming the building system of choice for low energy buildings?

What are SIPs?

Structural Insulated Panels of SIPs for short consist of an insulated core that is bonded on both sides with a skin, typically the skin material is orientated strand board (OSB3). The blank SIPs are manufactured in 1.2m wide panels with heights up to 6.25m and standard thicknesses from 100mm to 250mm to achieve u-values as low as 0.10 w/m2K.

Where to use SIPs?

SIPs is a strong yet lightweight system that is typically found in the inner leaf of the external walls and roof structure for high performance buildings. Internals: SIPs can be used for internal walls, but, the majority of our builds include timber or metal stud internal walls.

Benefits of building with SIPs?

SIPs offer the widely recognised offsite manufactured benefits of speed, limited disruption and waste, but, provide additional benefits:
improved comfort from thermal performance
inherent airtightness limits air leakages
create live-able roof spaces
impressive vaulted ceilings
large open span spaces without columns

How is SIPs installed?

The SIPs kit is delivered to your site and will need to be offloaded! A vehicle with hiab lifting capability or a telescopic handler can be used to unload the SIPs kit. Scheduling the deliveries for the days that a crane is on site will smooth all of the lifting operations (unloading materials, loading out/installing the SIPs, fitting beams and installing heavy roof panels).

What finishes can I use with SIPs?

Lightweight wall finishes like cedar, render, rainscreen and brick slips require no additional support. Traditional finishes like brickwork and stone typically require foundations to carry the increased weights. The full range of roof finishes are available with a ventilated cavity and additional deck required or not subject to your choice of product.
